Winter Work Bloggers - 2012

Webb Winter Work, Without All the Winter

Hey, I'm Steve! I'm currently a Senior and the Student Vice President at Webb Institute, and one of these days I'll have a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Every winter, Webb makes all it's students find winter internships and head off somewhere around the world for their "Winter Work" term. This year, I'm working for Navatek Ltd. in Hawaii.

Carbon Dust: Life in a high tech coal mine.
Its time to start blogging.

We work for New England Boatworks, a wonderful full service marina and boatyard just north of Newport. It was my goal to go to a small composite yard in the hope that I would get to do more hands on work than I would in a large steel yard. So far, entirely true. An hour into my first day, I was cutting and grinding a carbon stringer and fitting it to the hull.
This week, we flipped the boat.

Chilean Webbie @ SEA

Let’s start off at the beginning. Each year Webb Institute sends students out into the world for a semester/ term to work in the industry. This year is my sophomore year, so I’m with Military Sealift Command (MSC) on the USNS Henry J. Kaiser ship No. 187.

Sea Term On Ice: Antarctica with Maersk Line

For the 2012 sophomore work term I will be going on board the Maersk Peary along with my classmate, Conor O'Sullivan. We will be boarding ship in Perth, Australia on January 6th and sail down to McMurdo, then hopefully make it back to school back in time for classes through Singapore.
