A Note from the Student Organization

By Colin Spillane '13, Student Organization President

Now that classes have finally started, the sounds of learning are resonating again throughout the historic halls of Webb Institute. As we follow in the footsteps of the giants who once walked these halls, we have dutifully returned to a perpetual state of sleeplessness by sacrificing our own comfort to spend hours pondering the texts of naval architecture.

In the Classroom:

The freshmen are adjusting to the Webb workload with their first major task, the Freshman Boat Project, which was assigned mere hours into their first day on campus. This year they are tasked to expand their cobbling knowhow by designing and building a pair of floating shoes. They will showcase their shoes over Family Weekend wherein they will (hopefully) skim effortlessly across the water, racing against their fellow classmates for honor and glory. Having risen from the bottom rung, the sophomores are embracing their newfound power by accepting chairmanships and leadership roles in the Student Organization. This semester, four of the sophomores have set out to study abroad at the University of Southampton in England. The juniors are branching out through the three electives: Business Dynamics, Conversational Spanish, and Modern Architecture. The seniors have been attempting to balance the busy schedule of thesis, ship design, and tending to the ever needy Brocket Arms Pub. The pursuit of this balance is still in the development phase, and we will report back with our findings in June 2013.

Leadership Week:

The S.O. leaders began the semester with a very productive Leadership Week that included sessions with Bill Murray on the science and tactics of good leadership. Chris Allard ’04 of Metal Shark Aluminum Boats discussed what it entails to start and run your own company. The week culminated with a day of planning which produced well thought out goals for the semester.

Sports/Clubs:

It appears that the freshman class was recruited not only for their high test scores and love of boats but also for their athletic prowess. With great turnouts for both the soccer and sailing teams, we are hoping for victory on all fronts. Along with turnout for athletics, the freshmen flooded the first WooFS (Webb Family Singers) practice with a staggering 13 singers! With such an amazing turnout, everyone looked forward to the wall of sound that will occur at the first concert during Family Weekend.
