Class Of '70 Keeps on Truckin'

By David Bovet, Class Agent, ‘70

Homecoming 2010 was a great event for our class.  We are proud to report that the Class of ’70, duly anointed by one of Webb’s greatest professors as “The Worst Class in 40 years,” has now doubled that record: Yes, we doubt that any class has worsted us (or knitted us?) since we graduated so long ago.

In honor of our 40-year long escape from the Webbisphere, we did want to offer a suitable gift to the Institute.  Eric Linsner took the lead in researching appropriate gifts and making the first contribution.  Gradually the fever spread across the class – in the end we had 100% participation in making a special 40th reunion gift.  There is now a blue pickup truck on campus bearing the proud logo, “Gift of the Class of 1970.”

Yes, the truck you see was given by our class – and even better, built by our class!  What may look like an average Ford truck was actually handcrafted by skilled aged shipbuilders and assembled piece-by-piece into its present glory.  Many of us had sports cars when on campus and, though we may not have mastered all the intricacies of ship design, we did learn a lot about cars.  This is our latest collective masterpiece – an actual truck that runs.  You can observe 47% of our class driving the truck down to the Yacht Club in the accompanying photo.  Please kid our on-campus rep, Prof. George Petrie ‘70, whenever you see it.

1-4-2-4-2-4-1!  Adiabatic isothermal expansion!  Go Webb!
