Hadler and Payne Honored at SNAME Annual Meeting
The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers recognized two members of the Webb Family at its Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas.
The Vice Admiral “Jerry” Land Medal was presented to Trustee Stephen M. Payne for his outstanding accomplishment in the marine industry. Payne has recently retired as the Vice President and Chief Naval Architect for Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding after an impressive career involving over 40 passenger vessels for the Carnival brands. Among his most notable accomplishments, Payne was the Designer and Project Manager for the Queen Mary 2, a project that allowed him to fulfill a childhood dream of designing an ocean liner that rivaled the original Queen Mary.
The William H. Webb Medal was awarded to Professor Emeritus Jacques B. Hadler for his outstanding contributions to education in naval architecture and marine engineering. Hadler recently retired from the faculty at Webb Institute after 31 years of researching and teaching. During his tenure as a professor, research director, and dean, Hadler oversaw the update of the Webb undergraduate curriculum and brought a wealth of real-world experience to classroom discussions. Although he retired in June 2011, he continues to advise a senior thesis and remains involved with testing in the Robinson Model Basin. This award marks Hadler’s second SNAME Medal, having received the David W. Taylor Medal in 1982.
