Monday Lecture Series

The fall semester Monday Lecture Series consisted of the general lectures that were delivered to the whole student body, as well as specialized lectures that were delivered to each class. This arrangement allowed us to cover a wide range of topics and include presentations geared to the needs of each particular class.

The freshman class had discussions about ethical action and the Honor Code; religious and spiritual opportunities, handling stress, engineering graphics; and scholarship opportunities, including SMART and NUPOC.  The sophomores had STCW training, lectures on Sea Term preparation, and personal finance. The juniors’ lectures were related to ship regulations, Winter Work job searches, the thesis, ship design, and professional societies.

The seniors discussed the thesis guide in more detail, and had lectures devoted to the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, graduate school scholarships, job interviewing, and SNAME meeting preparations.

The general lectures included a students’ presentation titled: “Fairy Tales about Winter and Summer Work,” as well as Jim Foote’s presentation “Theodore Roosevelt: His Life and Times,” and John Halkyard’s talk about the design of floating platforms to support offshore oil & gas operations.  Tom Whidden’s lecture “A Career in the Yacht Business” was of great interest to many possible future yacht designers, and we all were deeply touched by the wisdom, kindness, honesty, and sincerity of Richard Goldbach’s talk, “Fifty-Seven Years in U.S. Shipyards.”

Our spring semester topics will include discussions on starting a business, ice, offshore structures, tugs and barges, modern architecture, and the secrets of the Great Pyramid. We hope to hear Joe Pyne, Andrew Kendrick, Bob Brier, Bruce Kirby, Christopher Allard, Stephen Payne, and Darrel Pelley.

We are very thankful to our speakers and to those of you who keep Webb in your hearts and memories and send us recommendations about interesting speakers and subjects. If you have any suggestions, please contact our Monday lecture coordinator, Professor Elena Goloubeva, Ph.D. at egoloubeva@webb-institute.edu.
