Descriptions Electrical Engineering
Professor Hennings
The increasing use of electrical and electronic equipment in modern vessels make necessary a more thorough treatment
of electrical and electronic engineering than is customary in a non-electrical engineering curriculum. An intensive,
analytical and practical course in electrical circuits and electronics is followed by a study of electro-mechanical
devices and control systems. Marine applications are given where possible.
Junior Year
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING I - CIRCUITS AND ELECTRONICS
A study of active circuits using semiconductor devices and integrated circuits for rectification, amplification, logic and wave shaping. Linear models are developed and circuit behavior analyzed. Microprocessors are introduced. Application is made to marine electronic navigation and communication systems. Two hours of class and two hours of laboratory per week in the first semester.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING II - MACHINES AND CONTROLS
A continuation of Electrical Engineering I covers principles of electro-magnetic devices and steady-state performance of transformers and rotating machines. Feedback in amplifiers and automatic control systems are analyzed. A discussion of marine electrical propulsion systems and ship automation concludes the course. Two hours of class and two hours of laboratory per week in the second semester.
