Matthew R. Werner Named ABS Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
On October 21, 2010, in a ceremony held in the Cuneo Courtyard, Associate Professor Matthew R. Werner was designated as Webb Institute’s first American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
The presentation was made by Mr. Christopher Wiernicki, chairman and C.O.O. of ABS, and RADM Robert Olsen, Jr. (USCG, ret.), president of Webb Institute. The chair is a result of ABS’s “active support of maritime-related educational programs;” through this support ABS has become “a catalyst for advancing educational programs at universities around the world.”
Professor Werner earned a BS degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb in 1995 and a Master’s degree in Ocean Technology and Commerce from Webb in 1997. In 2003 he earned an MBA from Long Island University. He has taught at Webb Institute since 2002.
Before joining the Webb faculty, Professor Werner was a Naval Architect for the Electric Boat Corporation, where his duties involved work on concept, preliminary, and detailed designs of nuclear-powered submarines, as well as technical support to shipyard activities, including dry dockings and repair projects. In 1998 he joined a chemical tanker owner/operator where he served as a vessel manager, technical superintendent, and director of quality, safety and security. In 1999 he was appointed project manager for a new-vessel acquisition project for a series of stainless steel chemical tankers.
Professor Werner has managed vessel dry dockings in Denmark, the Netherlands and Latvia, and he does consulting work in the areas of ship management and operations, ship repair, and ship design.
He is currently the chairman of SNAME’s Education Committee, and is the treasurer of the New York Metropolitan Section of SNAME. At Webb Professor Werner has served as a member of the Faculty Honor Committee, as the Sophomore Sea Term Coordinator, the ABET Accreditation Coordinator, the Faculty Advisor to Webb’s SNAME and Marine Technology Society (MTS) student sections, and, since 2009, as the faculty’s representative to Webb Institute’s Board of Trustees.
