Webb Students Help With Relief Effort in Haiti

On January 12th, an earthquake struck the small country of Haiti. The U. S. Geological Survey said that this quake was centered about 35 miles west-southwest of Port-au-Prince and 6.2 miles below the surface. The magnitude-7 quake has left the country in shambles; an estimated 1.5 million people are now homeless, and countless others are injured.

The U.S. Navy has responded quickly, sending relief in the form of food, water, and medical aid. Several vessels have been instructed to change their current courses and head down to Haiti to provide aid. Because our sophomore students are asked to spend their winter months at sea, five Webbies are getting the chance to be a part of the relief effort in Haiti.

Two students will be present on the BIG HORN, which has been instructed to refuel ships off the coast of Haiti. Two students are aboard the SACAGAWEA, which has supplies on board that will be airlifted into the country. And last but not least, one student on the LEROY GRUMMAN will be loading up with supplies, and heading down at the end of the month.
