5/14-15: Engineer's Cup
By Doug Zangre '13, Captain
Webb hosted the 2011 Engineer’s Cup this weekend, May 14-15, at the Webb Yacht Club. The weather on Saturday led to some tricky sailing conditions, with occasional 15 degree shifts, but the wind continued to blow throughout the day, allowing for the completion of 16 total races. Sunday started in a delay, but the wind finally picked up around 11 AM, allowing the race committee to run four additional races. Overall, it was a great weekend of competition and fun for all teams, which came from as far away as Ontario, Canada, to wrap up their college sailing seasons.
The regatta was won by Stevens Institute, which sailed with skill and determination. Webb Institute finished in a respectable third place. Freshmen James Codega and Samantha Griswold battled in a difficult A fleet on day one before passing on the torch to sophomores Troy Zangle and Sean Murphy on day two. Doug Zangre and Marc Smith dominated B division, finishing the regatta with 19 points in 10 races, including five first place finishes.
The regatta would not have been possible without the help of all the Webb sailors who organized the event, managed the races, and grilled burgers both days. While this event formally concludes the 2011 spring sailing season for Webb, we will continue to sail hard and practice in preparation for next fall.
